9. Explain, in 1,000 words or more, the social, political, and ecological ramifications of the Exxon Valdez disaster.
Definitely not a thousand words but: I like my car, oil heated home and plastic products. Pointing a finger at the "Evil" corporations who destroy our planet is hypocritical. On the flipside after changing the oil in my car I take care to dispose of it properly and I divide my refuse up for recycling. I'd like to think that corporations, on their scale, are showing the same responsibility.

One of the most shocking things for the American public about the incident was the indifference Exxon showed to the devastation it caused. Harangued by the Media, Government inquiries and Activist organizations Exxon lost huge profits. Stock prices fell and they became the poster boy for corporate negligence. It inspired the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and also made Corporate America aware that their image, profits(most especially profits) and practices will be under attack if their environmental responsibilities aren't met.

Public outcry rattled Exxon's cages and incited the media to air the dirty laundry. This was instrumental in causing financial losses for Exxon as well as tarnishing their image and condemning their modus operandi. I’d like to hope these actions would make it more profitable for Corporate America to act responsibly concerning the environment. It’s certainly helped, but monitoring these industries and their practices needs to continue. I recently saw an article that the 6.5 billion restitution due the local inhabitants and industries still hasn’t been paid by Exxon. Those cocksuckers are the most profitable corporation in the world. They may have become more responsible in transporting oil but it’s still the bottom line that drives them in a boggling heartless manner.

Exxon claims that current research shows Prince William Sound recovering admirably while organizations like Greenpeace refutes their claims as blatant lies. My opinion is that both entities have their own agendas and the truth lies somewhere in between those polarized views.

As far as the current condition of wildlife and ecology in the area I don’t know who to believe. The media is bent on shocking and titillating the public rather than the truth. Activists such as Greenpeace are extremists and will paint a dark picture. On the opposite end of the spectrum Exxon is bent on painting a rosy picture. Without physically going to the area I don’t see a way to accurately know the conditions there.

The Exxon Valdez has fallen off the top 50 list of largest Oil Spills on record yet it’s most remembered for it’ devastating effects and changes to the industries standards and practices. Generally speaking as a species I think were moving forward and there is genuine progress in how we treat the environment and utilize it’s resources. Our technology advanced beyond our maturity but very slowly we’re growing up. Fortunately as well the planet is a resilient creation and will surely survive our growing pains. Whether we do is another story.
