F13 & SW:G

From F13.net Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

f13.net has had a storied history with one of the most loved & reviled games in the history of MMORPGs. This isn't a history of Star Wars: Galaxies (here on referred to as SW:G) however. Rather, it's a chronicle of f13's history WITH SW:G. Below is a list of threads with some statistics on each as well as a few notes, if pertinent. Finally, I'd like to say this: This article would have been made if I hadn't done it. And really, who better than myself to do this? Maybe SOE?

April 6th, 2004: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=210.0 <br>Topic: This sums up why SWG sucks - Posts: 24 <br>Here, HRose links to Grimwell. There, they discussed why SW:G sucks. Why is this thread important. Because it happened in motherfucking 2004. Two months after f13 appeared. I don't even want to dig into the Waterthread archives. It will only depress me and I'll never finish the article. Also, please note that people are blaming the community, lack of content, and many other things that will be rehashed a number of times (each more depressing than the last) after this wiki article is complete.

May 29th, 2004: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=615.0 <br>Topic: AO Attempts to beat SWG at it's own game come September - Posts: 38 <br>Geldonyetich makes another moronic assumption on a topic that never matters. Because nothing about Anarchy Online matters. Ever. Yes, we're still happy he banned himself. This is fact: He is a silly asshole. This article is only important because of how ridiculous it is. As much as SW:G sucks and will continue to suck and did suck, AO sucks, sucked, and will suck twice as hard.

May 29th, 2004: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=612.0 <br>Topic: SWG: anybody keeping up with Jedi revamp? - Posts: 57 <br>The 29th of May was a pretty big day for SW:G. Part of me thinks it should have happened on the 3rd of May though. Oh man, an "art" joke. I slay me. Also, this thread has a lot of rehashing. I find that... funny and miserably depressing at the same time considering how long this article will be.

July 28th, 2004: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=861.0 <br>Topic: SWG Resubbing - Posts: 34 <br>Notable only because I resubbed. Fuck, I'm an idiot. BUT! Choice quote from myself: "SOE needs to stop production on this stupid game." Somehow, A YEAR (and change) LATER, they invite me to the studio wherein I insert foot in mouth.

December 4th, 2004: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=1647.0 <br>Topic: SWG finally getting a revamp? - Posts: 43 <br>This is where SW:G starts getting weird. Well, weirder than it was already. I guess. If that's possible.

May 14th, 2005: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=3295.0 <br>Topic: So hows SWG now with the Cu? - Posts: 76 <br>First response: "There have been a few threads on this already. Like: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=3108.0, http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=3027.0, and http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=2728.0.

Last I heard, all is still crap." - Samwise.

Why did I even post this thread if there had already been so many? IT'S BECAUSE I DIDN'T LINK TO THEM, HAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAH. Really though, this is a catchall. Historically important because of how many people in the Star Wars threads come and go like Herpes.

March 18th, 2005: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=2600.0 <br>Topic: Finally released the CU overview for SWG - Posts: 51 <br>"I’m Blair, producer for Star Wars Galaxies and more specifically in charge of the Combat Upgrade (CU) project." That really says it all, doesn't it?

April 25th, 2005: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=3027.0 <br>Topic: SWG CURB is going Live 10 days early - 4-26 - Posts: 93 <br>I don't even know what to say. Wasn't there another patch that went to Live really quickly after it was publically shown. For whatever reason, I'm having memory issues.

November 2nd, 2005: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=6346.0 <br>Topic: Star Wars Galaxies Revamp: Did someone say twitch? - Posts: 3,743 <br>How do you even talk about shit like this? So here's the deal. Smedley comes up to me at AGC, knowing I used to be a Galaxies fan. He said, and I quote: "Hey, would you like to fly into the Austin studio a few days after AGC. I have something you'd like to see." Well, it was something like that. I should have known better. But I went and my comments on what I played gave birth to this fucking 100 headed hydra of a thread. This thread is all 7 sins. It is also, in no particular order: shame, disgust, and a big bag of stupid, on all sides.

  • It showed how many people are/were interested in SW:G.
  • It showed how many people had axes to grind.
  • It showed SOE's inability to manage their own game.
  • It showed how insane Lucasarts is and continues to be.
  • It showed how Star Wars: Galaxies, as a game, was always a clusterfuck. This was just icing.
  • It showed that people will rehash the previous 2 years of discussion at the drop of a hat. Note by note, without missing a beat.

Now, you may be thinking I'm writing this with a certain amount of bias. And maybe I am. But I was there, I saw it, and I had to live that thread. The emails, the phone calls, and the chaos of the whole thing. I apologize for not being more clear and being taken in by the environment. Amateur hour, if you will. On that note, I also think that the entire MMORPG community has problems. In retrospect, I should have banned any talk of Galaxies after that thread finished. But wait, there's more!

May 7th, 2007: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=6860 <br>Topic: SWG NGE 2 -- maybe NGE wasn't such a good idea after all - Posts: 2,394 <br>Fuck man. f13 really likes to talk about Star Wars. So much so, that the sequel to the *twitch* thread hit 69 pages. I'd like to point out here that every forum on the internet has its obsessions. And more often than not, even if no one likes the topic, threads about them will go on and on and on. Really though, there's nothing to see here. It's the same discussions. Again. Amazing.

Skipping forward...

October 2nd, 2007: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=11017 <br>Topic: SWG - Smedley Apologizes for NGE - Posts: 246 <br>Alright guys, seriously. It's time to stop. Just from the threads I've posted here, the final tally is 6,798 posts. When does a website become a fansite? At what point do we cross over into territory we don't want to venture anywhere near. For reals. We're dangerously close to "obsession" territory. Obsession is one of those traits that producers serial killers and fanatics. Let's not go there. You, myself, and everyone else should be ashamed.

October 22nd, 2007: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=11163 <br>Topic: The Last SW:G Thread. This is where it ends, guys. - Posts: 1 to Infinity+1 <br>This is where I make a vain attempt to kill it all. This wiki article gave me the idea. Probably the best idea I've had since calling SW:G "twitchy." This thread launched with collision detection though...

October 22nd, 2007 So, the thread I made failed hard. Apparently a bunch of people thought I was a big SWG bigot or something. Or a freedom-hating frenchy or something. As such, I gave SW:G it's own forum and created a monster that no one can stop. Also, this gave way to the birth of the "Vader Pics" forum, located [here].

I suppose, the most important thing to understand is that, throughout all of this, f13 (or by extension, Bat Country) never existed in Star Wars: Galaxies.
